On
Saturday, September 20, 2008 the Tinker Swiss Cottage Museum and Gardens
will play host to the region’s first-ever croquet tournament. Because
of the popularity of croquet as a Victorian Era sport, this unique - and
relevant - fundraiser ties into the organization’s history with
the Cottage being built in 1865. The Cottage, built on a bluff overlooking
Kent Creek, is among only a few remaining Swiss-style homes from the 1800s
left in the United States. The All Amateur Tournament, which will be coordinated
by Steve Fluder of “Croquet Your Way,” will have two Divisions:
one for the experience 9 wicket croquet players and one for the less experienced
players. The tournament will be a USCA (United States Croquet Association)
sanctioned event and managed by National Croquet Champion Bob Kroeger.
Over $3000 in prizes will be awarded!
A
special evening event, Mallet Mayhem and Martini’s, will take place
to honor the sponsors on Friday, September 19th at Giovanni’s in
Rockford. The tournament’s festivities will also include a Victorian
Ice Cream Social, an antique car show, an early morning breakfast and
a BBQ lunch prepared by Hearthrock Café and served with Paul Youngblood’s
Snappy Sauce for players and spectators.
All proceeds will
benefit the education programs offered by Tinker Swiss Cottage Museum
and Gardens as well as the ongoing efforts to preserve, restore and conserve
the Cottage, the artifacts and the grounds.
